Are we losing the battle to control infectious diseases?

Wednesday 30 June, 6 pm
Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre

A free public event on the theme Are we losing the battle to control infectious diseases? will be held on Wednesday 30 June from 6pm - 7pm at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, Southbank.

The world is facing significant challenges in the control of infectious diseases. Not only are new diseases emerging such as SARS but old foes such as Influenza continue to emerge in varying forms. On the bacterial side we are faced with increasing levels of antibiotic resistance, which for some diseases such as multi-resistant tuberculosis, has virtually eliminated the arsenal of effective therapy.

What impact will understanding the genetics of microorganisms have on the development of new therapies, vaccines , health products and disease control mechanisms? Organisers of the 11th International Symposium on the Genetics of Industrial Microorganisms will showcase some of the contributions from their field at this event.

At this forum, world experts in the control of infectious disease, which include Professor Mervyn Bibb (UK), Professor Greg Tannock (Aust) , Professor Suzanne Garland (Aust) , Prof Hatch Stokes (Aust) and Prof Julian Davies (Canada) will provide insights into how microbial genetics has influenced disease control in the human population. Come along to this forum to hear how some of these impacts might effect you.

The discussion panel will be led RMIT Pro-Vice Chancellor, Professor Peter Coloe
